Getting Started

Although you may not have the largest gardening area, most nutrient-dense soil, or a perfectly green thumb, you can still grow a successful garden. Here are some tips and tricks to keep in mind when starting a garden.

Location

Choose a location that is full sun for at least 6 hours of the day. You don't have to have a large backyard to start a garden. Plants love being planted in the ground, in raised beds, or in pots.

Soil

Invest in high quality soil and compost to mix in with your current soil. You do not need to replace all that your yard currently has but mixing in enriched soil and compost will boost the nutrient value of your current soil.

Mulch

Mulch

Add mulch on top of the soil at the base of your plants. This will help with your plant’s water retention, will keep the soil cool and damp, and will lessen the amount of irrigation you need.

Remove weeds as soon as you see them. Weeds will fight young plants to steal the nutrients from the soil. When you encounter pests, there are plenty of homemade or organic remedies available. Check out Pinterest and YouTube for DIY recipes.
